Exceptional High Relief in Carrara Marble depicting St. Michael the Archangel and the Dragon, worked and sculpted by hand. Provenance Venice, private collection.
The work captures the moment in which the Saint is about to pierce the demon, the dragon, metaphorically Lucifer, with his sword, with the intent of driving him out of the kingdom of heaven. The images of the Archangel Michael casting out the devil are allegorical. The angels try to oppose his work in the world.
Lucifer would have been the most important of the Angels, but he did not want to depend on God, for which hell was born, since God to give his creature what he wanted, made him expel from his realm and allowed him to become the God of his own kingdom , or Hell.
A relevant and noteworthy information of this high relief is the fact that the saint is represented with a scales in his hand. An unusual iconography, compared to the usual depictions of the Saint holding only the sword or spear in his hand.
But in many representations of the past, (church of Laguenne, Locronan (Finistère), mural painting by Saulcet (Allier, 15th century), cemetery of Casetllo di Rostino (Corsica, 15th century), on a painted panel of the Orléans museum (15th century), on a sculpture of the church of Mussy-sur-Seine (Aube, 15th century), on the altarpiece of the Certosa di Pavia, by Perugino (preserved in the National Gallery), and in many others the Saint is depicted precisely with a scale in hand.
His job was to weigh souls !!!!
