St. Peter is depicted with a large key in his hand, the representation derives from the words that Jesus said to Peter:
"You are Peter and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, what you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and everything you loose on earth it will be dissolved in the heavens. "
Saint Paul is represented with the sword, he was killed pierced by it. He was considered a noble way to die; he was a Roman citizen. The sword therefore symbolizes his martyrdom. But another meaning is also given to the sword: St. Paul is called "the apostle of the Gentiles", because he was the first to understand that Christ's message was for the whole world, not just for the Jews, and he brought this message everywhere. . The sword is an instrument of conquest. For St. Paul, his sword, with which he conquered the world, was his word, his eloquence.
