19th Century Oil Painting of a Vulture on Board

19th Century Oil Painting of a Vulture on Board

Hutton-Clarke Antiques is pleased to offer this evocative 19th-century oil painting of a vulture. Painted on board, the work captures the raw and striking presence of the bird, with its powerful hooked beak, bare red head, and folded brown wings. The artist has rendered the vulture in a naturalistic yet atmospheric manner, set against a dark background that heightens its dramatic character. A fine example of Victorian fascination with the natural world and symbolic imagery, this painting reflects both curiosity and the more macabre tastes of the period.

Presented in a simple period frame, the work retains its aged surface with craquelure and wear, adding to its authentic charm. A rare and unusual subject matter for the 19th century, making it a strong decorative piece as well as a collector’s item.
