Fine Dutch 17th Century paneled Cabinet

Fine Dutch 17th Century paneled Cabinet

This is a remarkable cabinet, a true gem, with four beautiful female figures, delicately applied ebony inlays, and three beautifully carved heads in the frieze beneath the hood. In the center is a man's head flanked by two women's heads.

With an added surprise: a beautiful interior, the likes of which you rarely encounter.

Two openwork-carved doors depicting sea creatures. I only encounter these cabinets with these figures in Frisian Keeftkasten, so I assume this cabinet was made in Friesland.

Holland or Friesland. Below the doors is another drawer, also featuring carvings of sea creatures.

Below both doors is a wide drawer flanked by lion heads.

Next to the doors are beautiful sidepieces with lovely fluting.

The lower fluting is positive, applied, and made of genuine ebony—a common feature of Frisian cabinets.

The lock is original and the key works. The sides have quarter-sawn panels between the rails and uprights with beautiful profiles.

The four women symbolize four virtues: faith on the top left, hope on the right, love on the bottom left, and justice on the right.

A very special piece of furniture from the Renaissance period around 1650.

Some minor restorations have been done here and there, and otherwise it is completely original.

Dutch 17th century Zeeland Cabinet.

Dutch 17th century Zeeland Cabinet.

Beautiful and stylish Zeeland cabinet with four doors.

Circa 1650.

At this time, Zeeland, along with the rest of Holland, was the richest country in the world thanks to the shipping and trade it generated. Because the Roman Catholic Church no longer held power, and the church and king were no longer the dominant power, but the middle class held the reins, money was better distributed so the entire country could benefit – this system allowed the Netherlands to become so wealthy.

Money that is too much in one pile is less effective.

This wealth is fully expressed in this piece of furniture.

A rich and exceptionally beautiful cabinet made entirely in the Zeeland tradition.

The proportions are characteristic, wider than it is tall.

The narrow and wide doors at the top are also typically Zeelandic.

Beautiful cornice panels with beautiful Renaissance miters – with inlaid black ebony

in the doors. In the hood below the cornice, a quarter-round profile with 'groaning', those teardrop-shaped figures. This is a typical feature of the Italian Renaissance, which became popular in Holland and Zeeland in the 17th century.

Three beautifully carved lion heads flank the doors above.

Below are three pilasters, with a woman's head in the center and two men's heads next to her.

All the details are meticulously crafted.

In the center is a hidden drawer spanning the entire width.

elegant cabinet with drawers. Chiffonnière.

elegant cabinet with drawers. Chiffonnière.

A beautiful chiffonier with six practical drawers.
A special feature of these drawers is that the front can be opened using a handy hinge mechanism—you press two catches and then the front folds down.
This makes it much easier to access the contents.
Sometimes you see this with just one drawer, with a desk behind it, but here it applies to all the drawers.

Transition from Louis XVI to Empire, circa 1795.

Very beautiful wood—satinwood—gorgeous grain.
Elegant tapered legs.

A brass gate sits above.

I've included two photos of Hollywood Regency lamps to show a combination of two very different style periods that work so well together, providing inspiration for those pursuing an eclectic interior.
You can also see the effect a wall painted in a slightly different color than white has.

The piece is in very good condition.

Dutch 17th century Arched Cabinet

Dutch 17th century Arched Cabinet

Dutch 17th century Arched Cabinet
Also called a Utrecht bar cabinet, but there is no difference from a Dutch bar cabinet.
Quarter-sawn oak. The sawing direction highlights the food containers in the wood.
This creates a beautiful grain pattern.
A lighter wood species is used here and there for contrast.
This also applies to the arches. Beautiful Renaissance style.
The arches, the small arches at the top of the doors, are derived from the triumphal arches of classical antiquity.
A wide drawer is located beneath the doors.
The sides also feature this beautiful arch design.
Artfully carved lion heads are incorporated into the hood.
The interior has two original shelves.
The lock is original and the key works.

early table with drawer

A beautiful, early table with a drawer.
This design is very traditional and less bound by fashion.
This model was found throughout Europe and the whole construction is puerly middelaged.

The brackets supporting the drawer are attached to the top with a dovetail joint.
A beautiful, old technique that also prevented the top from warping.
You see tables with "legs" like this one from the Middle Ages up to the 18th century.
A time-tested construction.
Beautiful, heavy sled legs and a rail between the legs.
A lovely, warm patina.

Paneled Cabinet

Paneled Cabinet

Beautiful and early Dutch panel cabinet.
The only decoration is the panels themselves.
This simplicity was very popular with the Calvinist Dutch.
Between 1610 and 1630.

Very beautiful quarter-sawn oak, immediately recognizable by the striking grain in the wood.
These tiger stripes in the grain are called wainscot.
When you cut the wood straight through the center of the trunk (quartering), the food vessels running from the center to the trunk are exposed.

Early forged jaw hinges - see detailed photos.
The cabinet still stands on continuous uprights all the way to the floor, which is early; ball feet only came into fashion at the end of the 17th century and in the 18th century.
Beautiful panels also adorn the sides.

A lovely interior with shelves. (Original)

The lock is original. See photo.
